If you recently found out you’re pregnant and you want an abortion, you may wonder why you need an ultrasound. There are three very important reasons you need an ultrasound (even before an abortion!) to protect your health and body.
What does an ultrasound do?
An ultrasound utilizes sound waves to generate a picture of the inside of your uterus. This will reveal important information about your pregnancy, where it’s located, and how far along you are.
Because ultrasound utilizes sound waves and not radiology, it is completely safe.
Why do I need an ultrasound?
An ultrasound is important for three reasons:
- It reveals how far along you are. This will determine what options are available to you, especially which abortion options you may or may not be eligible for.
- It reveals where your pregnancy is located. If the ultrasound shows an empty uterus but your pregnancy test came back positive, you may have an ectopic pregnancy. It is not viable and also poses dangerous threats to your health. You’ll need to seek medical care immediately.
- It reveals whether or not your pregnancy is viable. Did you know that approximately 20% of pregnancies end in natural miscarriage? An ultrasound will either reveal a miscarriage or a healthy, growing pregnancy.
